WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump said on Monday that the United States will send more weapons to Ukraine just days after pausing critical shipments to Kyiv.
The Pentagon made a surprise announcement last week that it would hold weapons deliveries to Ukraine over concerns that stockpiles in the U.S. were getting too low.
“We have to," Trump told reporters as he hosted a dinner for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. ”They have to be able to defend themselves. They’re getting hit very hard now. We’re going to send some more weapons — defensive weapons primarily."
The Pentagon released a statement on Monday saying, "At President Trump's direction, the Department of Defense is sending additional defensive weapons to Ukraine to ensure the Ukrainians can defend themselves while we work to secure a lasting peace and ensure the killing stops."
Department of Defense spokesman Sean Parnell added that its framework for Trump to evaluate military shipments worldwide continues as part of "America First" defense priorities.
Trump has struggled to find a resolution to the war in Ukraine, but maintains he’s determined to quickly conclude a conflict that he had promised as a candidate to end on Day One of his second term.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said Monday that the pause in weapons to Ukraine came as part of a “standard review of all weapons and all aid” that the U.S. “is providing all countries and all regions around the world. Not just Ukraine.”
Leavitt added Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the global review to ensure that “everything that’s going out the door aligns with America’s interests.”
The U.S. has been Ukraine’s largest donor, with about $67 billion in military assistance sent to Ukraine since Russia launched its invasion in February 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelenskyy said 27 people were injured, including three children, on Monday after Russia launched 101 drones against the country.
"Many regions were affected, and air raid sirens are blaring again across many regions this morning due to attack drones," Zelenskyy wrote on X. "In total, over the past week, there were around 1,270 drones, 39 missiles, and nearly a thousand guided bombs."
