Description
Albany, Georgia (WALB) — Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital is giving away 100 free 3-D mammograms this May in honor of Mother’s Day and to help more women catch breast cancer early.
The advanced 3-D test, also called breast tomosynthesis, works like a regular mammogram but takes multiple thin images of the breast. Doctors say that gives a clearer, more detailed look at breast tissue and can help find problems earlier, even when normal tissue overlaps.
Phoebe radiologist Dr. Shailaja Sappati said early detection is one of the most important ways to reduce the impact of breast cancer, and these free screenings could be life-saving for women who otherwise might skip their annual mammogram.
To qualify, women must be 40 or older, uninsured, not pregnant, have not had a mammogram in the last year, have no current breast symptoms, live in one of the eligible southwest Georgia counties, and have a referring physician. The offer is only for initial screening mammograms, not follow-up tests.
Women who meet those requirements can call the Phoebe Patient Contact Center at 229-312-4800 to apply for one of the free appointments.
