TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC/Gray News) - President Trump will not be attending the Alabama-Georgia game Saturday as originally planned.
According to the White House, the president canceled his visit to Saturday’s highly anticipated college football game in Tuscaloosa as Hurricane Isaias continued its path to the Gulf Coast on Friday.
Trump also confirmed his decision to not attend the game in a Truth Social post, stating that it was important to have first responders staying focued on storm response.
“Based on the fact that a huge hurricane/storm is coming, it is important to have our wonderful first responders, law enforcement, and others focused on that storm, and in no way be thinking about the safety, or presence, of the president,” his message read.
Earlier in the week, the president announced his plans to visit Bryant-Denny Stadium when Alabama hosts Georgia in a Top 10 matchup following an afternoon rally in Tennessee.
“Well, hurricane and football? I love Alabama. I gotta go to the game. It’d be awfully hard,” Trump said in a Wednesday interview when asked whether Hurricane Isaias might alter his plans.
Trump continued to say that day that he would not want to take the focus of first responders and law enforcement away from their response to the storm, adding he wanted people to be safe.
College football officials are continuing to discuss how Hurricane Isaias might affect the game. As of now, the game is scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m. Alabama time.
According to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Isaias had grown into a Category 3 storm on Friday and was expected to make landfall Friday night.
