SOUTH GEORGIA (WALB) - The Georgia Forestry Commission encourages Georgians to plant pollinator-friendly gardens this summer.

June is National Pollinator Month, making it a perfect time to be a steward for pollinators.

The Forestry Commission says many pollinator populations are losing habitat. Creating pollinator gardens can help make up for lost habitat.

Those looking to create a garden should use a variety of flowers and provide pollinators with a water source. Avoid using pesticides in these gardens. For more resources on how to be a good pollinator steward, you can visit the U.S. Forest Service here.

According to the Georgia Forestry Commission, pollinators are part of a necessary ecological process. They are vital in over 100 crops in the U.S.

Pollinators, such as bees, carry pollen from one plant to another, thereby fertilizing the plant. This process leads to the development of seeds and fruit.

Several species other than bees can help in this natural mutualistic process. The USDA says pollinators can include:

• Butterflies
• Moths
• Humming Birds
• Birds
• Bats
• Flies
• Beetles
• Some small mammals
