VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. (TNND) — Protesters and border patrol clashed on Thursday as federal officials carried out a raid on a Southern California farm, resulting in authorities throwing canisters with smoke in the air to try and disperse the crowd.
Aerial footage showed agents standing in a skirmish line blocking a group of protesters from crossing the road between fields.
Assistant Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin said law enforcement was executing a criminal search warrant at a marijuana facility.
"Our brave officers will continue to enforce the law," she wrote on X.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom criticized the raid on social media, saying, "Kids running from tear gas, crying on the phone because their mother was just taken from the fields."
"Trump calls me 'Newscum' - but he's the real scum," he added.
CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott responded to Newsom, stating that agents found 10 juveniles at the marijuana farm.
"Here’s some breaking news: 10 juveniles were found at this marijuana facility - all illegal aliens, 8 of them unaccompanied," Scott wrote. "It’s now under investigation for child labor violations. This is Newsom’s California."
The Ventura County Fire Department reported that paramedics took four people to the hospital and treated three others at the scene.
"VCFD’s commitment is to the safety of all members of our community, and to provide professional, compassionate emergency care regardless of immigration status. Our firefighters respond to every emergency without hesitation or judgement. Immigration status is never a factor in the care that we provide, and we do not ask, record or report that information," the department said.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS)followed up on the raid and said eight "law enforcement rescued unaccompanied migrant children, from what looks like exploitation, violation of child labor laws and potentially human trafficking or smuggling."
The incident comes as federal immigration enforcement agents ramp up arrests in California.
The Trump administration has had the National Guard protecting ICE agents carrying out the raids, and this week it sent a large caravan with guns and horses to MacArthur Park in Los Angeles.
