ORIGINAL STORY: Gwinnett County police officer dead, another critically injured in shooting near Stone Mountain hotel

Gov. Kemp posted on social media Sunday afternoon to share prayers for the fallen and injured officers.

“Today, we join the Gwinnett County Police Department in mourning the loss of a brave officer and are praying for the swift recovery of another,” Kemp said. “This is the latest reminder of the dangers law enforcement face on a daily basis, and we are grateful for every one that puts themselves in harm’s way to protect their fellow Georgians.”

Law enforcement communities across north Georgia shared their heartbreak:

In Hall County, which neighbors Gwinnett, the sheriff’s office asked the “community to remember our colleagues at the Gwinnett County Police Department in an attack on two officers.”

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office shared this message:

Sheriff Freeman and the men and women of the FCSO send our deepest sympathies to our neighbors, the Gwinnett County Police Department. This morning two heroes of the Gwinnett County Police Department were shot responding to a call at a hotel. One police officer has died and another is in critical condition. The suspect was shot by the officers.

Theses officers arrived for duty today like all of us do, to protect their community. A cowardly criminal tried to shatter that duty. These heroes stood in the breach to keep others safe.

Our prayers are with the men and women of the GPD and the families and friends of the officers.

Sheriff Freeman has offered any and all assistance from the FCSO if needed.

Rome Police Department said they are “mourning” and extended condolences to the fallen officer’s family, loved ones and colleagues.

“...we are praying for the full recovery of the injured officer. We stand in solidarity with the Gwinnett County Police Department and all who are grieving during this incredibly difficult time,” they went on to say.

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office shared this message on social media.

Walton County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and coworkers of the Gwinnett County Police Officer lost in the line of duty this morning. There will never be words adequate enough to express the profound loss that is felt.

Please join us in praying for all involved, including an additional officer who is currently in critical condition.

Gwinnett County police said an official donation link has been set up for anyone wanting to support the officers’ families.
