Description

(TNND) — Americans hold widely different views of some federal agencies based on their politics, while other departments enjoy broad, bipartisan support.

And with power flipping this year to President Donald Trump and the GOP, the Pew Research Center found Republican opinion surging for the Justice Department, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services.

Public opinion for all four of those agencies has plummeted for Democrats.

“The messaging, it's just amazing in this day and age we live in now, where Republicans and Democrats pick up these cues so easily in terms of how they form opinions about things once something gets politicized,” Oklahoma State University politics professor Seth McKee said.

The Pew Research Center published a new survey on how Americans view federal government agencies and departments.

Overall public ratings of the agencies haven’t changed much, but the composition of the support has for many of them, according to the Pew Research Center.

Over half of Republicans now rate the Justice Department favorably, up 18 percentage points from last year.

Meanwhile, 28% of Democrats now view the Justice Department favorably, down 27 points from last year.

The widest split is seen with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Over 70% of Republicans express a favorable view of ICE.

Just 13% of Democrats do, as well.

“Trust in government and agencies has declined over the past number of decades,” said Peter Loge, the director of the School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University. “Part of it is because of some well-publicized failures. Part of it is because candidates attack federal agencies and undermine public trust. Candidates will say you can't trust the FBI, the IRS, the CDC, because those people are out to get you, whether or not that's the case. And eventually, people then internalize it.”

The Pew Research Center asked Americans to give a thumbs up or down to 16 federal agencies.

Most of the agencies, 13, got overall favorable ratings.

But just six of the 16 were viewed favorably by at least half of both Republicans and Democrats: the National Park Service, Veterans Affairs, National Weather Service, NASA, the Social Security Administration, and the U.S. Postal Service.

“The Postal Service, it just isn't polarizing at all,” McKee said. “Everybody likes that their mail comes.”

Federal agencies can be split to some extent into two groups: those that are politicized and those that aren’t.

“You could also dump the list into the category of agencies that are in the headlines and agencies that aren't,” Loge said.

Attention gets drawn to agencies in the headlines, he said.

If you’re a Republican seeing news about something a federal agency is doing on behalf of the Republican administration, you’re probably going to have a favorable reaction, Loge said.

If you’re a Democrat, it’s likely going to be the opposite reaction.

“Candidates for decades now have been saying, ‘Those people in Washington, those faceless bureaucrats,’” Loge said.

Federal workers then become “collateral damage” in the politics, which Loge said is “tremendously demoralizing” to government employees.

Loge, who has 30 years of experience in politics and communications, said he’s worked with a lot of career experts in the federal government.

“And they tend to be very smart, very committed, very good people, trying to do the best they can for the American people,” Loge said. “They want to keep out of politics.”

McKee said Trump is making agencies more political.

He pointed to the FBI raid of former Trump administration national security adviser John Bolton, calling that move “purely political.”

“Historically, the FBI was always more approved of by Republicans when we think about law and order. But I think that did pivot some because when Trump was out of office, he attacked the FBI, because he said that the FBI was going after him. Now he's back in charge, and the FBI is his agency to go after his enemies,” McKee said. “So, you can't get any more political than something like the FBI.”

Public health might not have been highly political a decade ago, but McKee said that changed with the debates over masking and whatnot during the pandemic.

And now Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is remaking his agency and vaccine policy to the dismay of doctors and other health experts.

But the Pew Research Center found that GOP views of HHS improved considerably from last year, up to 51% favorability from 33% last year.

Meanwhile, Democratic views of HHS have taken a dive, moving from 68% favorable last year to just 47% favorable now.

“I don't see any good reason to politicize any of these agencies,” McKee said. “Their mission, depending on the agency, the mission is hard enough. And then when you politicize things, it's not just a distraction, but it can lead to gross incompetency. Because these agencies are not designed to further a political agenda. That's not what they're for. And so, when you do that, you're crossing wires. And then you're really screwing things up.”

The Pew Research Center found that overall opinion was highest for the Park Service, Weather Service, Postal Service and NASA.

Opinion was lowest overall for the IRS, Justice Department, ICE and the State Department.
