Description

CRISP COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) released online safety tips Thursday, Feb. 19, for any parents and guardians to be aware of. CCSO specifically referenced Roblox, a children’s game platform that is actively being investigated in the state of Georgia.

Crisp County officials explained that games and applications like Roblox can be fun, but they can also expose children to dangerous situations because of their messaging features, voice chats, private groups and friend-requesting capabilities.

Some of those potential dangers, CCSO said, are as follows:

  • Online predators posing as other children
  • Inappropriate conversations and images
  • Cyberbullying
  • Requests for personal information
  • Encouragement to move conversations to more private platforms

Rather than just hosting entertaining games, CCSO said platforms like Roblox, Fortnite and Snapchat are social networks with live communication capabilities.

The sheriff’s office offered advice in light of this. They encouraged parents and guardians to take the following steps:

  • Know what apps your child is using
  • Turn on parental controls and privacy settings
  • Keep gaming systems and devices in common areas of your home
  • Monitor friend lists and chat features
  • Talk openly with your child about online safety
  • Teach them to never share personal information (address, school, phone number, photos)

CCSO added that if something feels off, you should trust your instincts. They said that screenshots and saved messages can be instrumental in a potential investigation.

“We are not posting this to create fear — we are posting it to create awareness. Technology is evolving faster than ever, and as parents and guardians, we must stay one step ahead."

If you are suspicious of online activity involving your child, CCSO said to contact them immediately. Their phone number is (229) 276-2600.
