Description

SCHLEY COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - With side-by-sides and four-wheelers becoming a more common sight around Schley County, residents are being reminded to make safety a priority before taking these vehicles onto local roads.

The reminder comes after several recent concerns were reported about side-by-sides and ATVs being driven recklessly on area roadways.

Side-by-sides can be driven on county roads when they meet certain requirements. Vehicles must have a valid tag and insurance, along with working headlights and taillights, and they must be driven by a licensed adult. Their use is limited to county roads, and they cannot be driven along state routes except when crossing them.

Four-wheelers and ATVs, however, are not permitted on public roadways.

The biggest concern is safety. These recreational vehicles offer less protection than traditional cars and trucks, making risky driving especially dangerous for drivers, passengers, and others sharing the road.

Schley County Sheriff Scott Nelson is encouraging residents to understand the rules before heading out and to operate side-by-sides and ATVs responsibly.

Whether heading out for recreation, visiting neighbors, or traveling around rural areas, drivers are being asked to slow down, follow the rules, and consider everyone else using the roadway.

Taking a little extra caution can help keep Schley County roads safe for everyone.
