ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — On a typical Saturday, the Beltline is bustling with activity. But as an ice storm bears down on metro Atlanta, local businesses are facing a critical decision: close their doors or risk the safety of their community.
For many, the choice is clear — no amount of lost revenue is worth putting customers and staff in danger.

GAIN.ATL , a women-centered gym and community space in the Reynoldstown neighborhood, made the difficult call to cancel all classes for the entire weekend. The gym, which has only been open for six months, represents a significant investment in the community — which makes the closure especially tough.

Co-owners Katie Wetzel and Erin McDevitt said they made the call on Thursday evening.
“We have coaches who commute pretty far,” Wetzel said. “Safety is our top priority, both in the gym and outside of it.”
Closing a newly opened business during what could be a booming weekend isn’t easy. McDevitt acknowledged the difficult balance between business success and community responsibility.
“I think it was the best decision for our staff, and we want to keep them safe and everyone coming in our doors safe,” she said. “We had full classes too, so that’s tough as a business.”

The uncertainty of severe weather only compounds the challenge.
“It’s really challenging because you don’t know what’s going to happen… so this is the first thing we’ve had related to the weather,” McDevitt said.
With the gym empty and silent this weekend, the women of GAIN.ATL hope this closure is temporary. They’re confident that once the ice storm passes, their community will return stronger and safer than before.
