Description

SEATTLE (KOMO) — Labor unions joined forces to march through downtown Seattle and protest the immigration raids throughout the country that culminated this weekend when ICE agents detained SEIU California President David Huerta.

“For us today, it's really about coming together in solidarity and support for President David Huerta and what happened to him in LA,” said Greg Ramirez with SEIU 6.

Led by the Service Employees International Union and others, the march and rally called for an end to the immigration raids and Huerta’s immediate release. Other participants in Seattle included MLK Labor and OneAmerica.

On Friday afternoon, military-gear-clad ICE agents launched raids throughout Los Angeles. Huerta was assaulted, injured, and detained while advocating for immigrant workers. While he has been released from the hospital, he remains in federal custody.

“I think the level of cruelty and the way in which they are completely ignoring due process and just disappearing people, snatching them up and disappearing them, is a new level of completely having any disregard for the law or for justice,” said Roxana Norouzi, the executive director of OneAmerica. “I think this weekend what we saw was their playbook at an all-time high, creating a public crisis by unleashing the National Guard, military force, on everyday people like us."

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell made a brief appearance at the demonstration, telling participants that Seattle supports immigrants and stands with Huerta’s cause. Seattle City Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck was also in attendance and joined in many of the chants.

“I think we need every elected official at every corner of this state, from the governor down to local mayors, to see this as not only an attack on everyday people but an attack on local and state governments,” Norouzi said.

Huerta faces a felony charge of conspiracy to impede an officer, prosecutors said. In a criminal complaint, the Department of Homeland Security alleges that Huerta and other protesters attempted to halt the service of a search warrant in downtown Los Angeles by forming picket lines on public sidewalks to prevent officers from entering.

“All I can say is he was exercising his First Amendment rights, as we do in many of these demonstrations,” Ramirez said. “It's a constitutionally protected right, and we're just here to call for his release so he can be home with his family."

Protests rocked the Los Angeles area over the weekend in response to the Trump administration’s intensified immigration crackdown, prompting clashes between demonstrators and police and leading to dozens of arrests.

About 300 National Guard troops are on the ground after Trump deployed them to protect federal personnel and property. It’s the first time a president has called in the National Guard without a state’s request or consent in decades. Another 500 Marines are ready to deploy.

“We have to keep rising up. We need every single person who is seeing what is happening to come out to the streets,” Norouzi said. We are fighting for the soul of our country right now and the soul of our democracy."
