Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Southwest Georgia leaders, advocates, and political organizers are weighing in on the historic election night after Georgia voters elected former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms as the nation’s first Black female governor.

Bottoms’ victory over Republican Rick Jackson tops a Democratic sweep across statewide offices, marking the first time in more than two decades a Democrat has won the governor’s race.

Albany’s first black female mayor reacts to election results

Former Albany Mayor Dorothy Hubbard, who made history herself as Albany’s first Black female mayor, said she was elated by the milestone and believes Bottoms has the experience needed to govern the entire state.

“She will represent Black women, but she will also represent the entire state of Georgia, which is what a good public servant will do,” Hubbard said. “I think she’s going to be concerned about the people that she represents. I think she will always put the people first.”

Hubbard, who served as mayor alongside Bottoms when Bottoms led Atlanta, emphasized that Bottoms’ platform addresses community needs across South Georgia, including expanding Medicaid access and strengthening early childhood education.

“It’s important for her to know that it’s not about her,” Hubbard said. “It’s really about the people and the people she can help. And that is the kind of personality she has.”

Kitchen-table issues drive ‘Blue wave’

Joyce Barlow, chair of the Dougherty County Democratic Party, said voters made their voices heard at the ballot box because they felt neglected by state leadership.

“They wanted someone that was relatable. They didn’t want to have a billionaire in office, someone that understands the everyday struggle of going to the gas station, someone that understands actually managing a family, a household, on a regular income,” Barlow said. “It means effective leadership for everyday people. That’s what it means for us.”

Barlow noted that Bottoms’ win represents validation for years of local organizing, but also brings added expectations to deliver on Medicaid expansion, small business investment, and public school funding for rural families.

“It says that the work we’ve done has not been in vain,” Barlow said. “Yes, there is more added pressure for her and to perform, making sure that she can reach all areas, all access... and there’ll be other little girls that are looking at these opportunities that have been afforded to the women who are in those positions.”

The work to mobilize rural voters

Grassroots organizers also attribute the election outcome to a significant mobilization of rural and younger voters.

Sherrell Byrd, founder of the nonpartisan organization SOWEGA Rising, said voter turnout surged across Southwest Georgia following months of direct door-knocking, campus voter drives at Albany State University, and community events across 14 counties.

“We’ve seen numbers that are going to actually show that over 2022’s midterm election, we saw an increase all across the board with people of color,” Byrd said. “Our youth numbers increased as well. These are traditionally low-propensity voters... so to see those numbers increase this year was a huge testament to why we saw the historic results that we got in Georgia.”

Byrd noted that the kitchen-table issues drove people to the polls regardless of party affiliation. But now that the election is over, she urged rural residents to remain engaged and hold the incoming administration accountable.

“This is what happens when you strategize, mobilize, and organize rural communities,” Byrd said. “It’s not just about voting, but it’s about what you do after you vote to keep your issues present and top of mind, so that these leaders are continuing to serve the communities that put them in office.”

Local political observers also note the statewide Democratic victories reflect years of work. Dr. Autumn Abdullah, an assistant professor at Albany State University, pointed to the grassroots outreach that began during earlier election cycles.

“Indeed, we did watch history unfolding,” Abdullah said. “What we saw in Georgia’s 2026 elections, not only with the governor’s race, [reflects] a change in the electorate, change in political coalitions, and voter participation.”

What’s next under the Gold Dome

In an unexpected move Wednesday, Gov. Brian Kemp confirmed he will not call a special legislative session to challenge district lines or executive authority, stating Republicans have a responsibility to “heed the will of voters.”

Gov. Kemp also congratulated Bottoms and U.S. Senate incumbent Jon Ossoff Wednesday for winning their races.

Bottoms and fellow newly elected statewide officials will take office in January.
