MOULTRIE, Ga. (WALB) - A Moultrie man is competing on NBC’s “The Voice” Season 29, looking to become the next star from South Georgia alongside household names like Luke Bryan and Ray Charles.

He said his time spent in church is what got him into music.

“I got into singing a long time ago. My family’s always been musical, but mostly the singing came from being in church and choir and just, you know, eventually picked up the guitar and went from there,” Griffin said.

Griffin chose Grammy award-winning singer Kelly Clarkson as his coach and joined “Team Kelly.” Clarkson’s success took off after she won a season of “American Idol” in 2002.

Griffin said his family has been a huge part of his success and pushed him to try out for the show in Nashville. He said they were especially supportive of him trying out for their favorite music competition show.

“It’s crazy. My family—you know—Nana, Pop, all of them always told me I should, you know, do one of these shows specifically. ‘The Voice’ has always been their favorite, and I never thought I’d actually do it. And it kind of just presented itself to me in Nashville. And it’s worked out pretty good so far,” he said.

Building relationships off-screen

Griffin said the best part of his experience is the relationships he’s made off-screen.

“It’s been an amazing experience so far. Being on ‘The Voice,’ being from southwest Georgia. Moultrie, it’s a lot different than being in LA, but the best part of being out there is some of the stuff you don’t see on TV—the friends I’ve gotten to make and those relationships I get to carry even after the show is done. But it’s it’s been a great experience just working with some of my favorite artists that, you know, I never thought I would get to meet, let alone work with,” Griffin said.

Griffin said he’s proud to represent Moultrie in this way.

“It’s an honor to get to represent the area I grew up in. Just like when I’m at home last weekend, a couple weeks ago. It’s crazy just to run into people that I may not even know. But they know me, and to know that I’ve had an impact like that. And especially— my mom’s a kindergarten teacher, and knowing how much those kids are excited to see me on TV and cheer for me, I hope I can inspire them if they want to play an instrument or sing,” he said.

Griffin’s story is inspiring others in Moultrie to follow their dreams while bringing South Georgia to the national stage.
