DAWSON, Ga. (WALB) - Earlier this afternoon, July 17, there was a heavy law enforcement presence in Dawson near Augusta Street Northeast.

WALB received many tips about this incident and reached out to officials in an attempt to confirm details but had no success.

We now know that the individual involved was wanted for aggravated assault on a peace officer. As part of the investigation, officers executed a search warrant at the Augusta Street residence.

Upon entering the residence, the Dawson Police Department (DPD) reported finding the individual dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Following the discovery, the scene was secured by law enforcement. The Terrell County Sheriff’s Office, DPD, Sylvester GBI office all responded to this incident.

Officials have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public, but residents are asked to avoid the area to allow law enforcement to perform their duties without interruption.

The Sylvester GBI will be investigating this incident, according to the DPD.
