FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KATV) — The suspect arrested in connection with the double homicide at Devil’s Den State Park made his first court appearance on Friday.
Andrew James McGann, 28, is accused of killing Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, of Prairie Grove.
McGann is facing two counts of capital murder.
McGann appeared at the Washington County Courthouse on August 1, where he was appointed a public defender.
During the hearing, Washington County Prosecuting Attorney Brandon Carter did request that McGann have no contact with the victims' family.
McGann has been ordered to be held without bond. His arraignment is set for August 25.
McGann was arrested at Lupita's Body Salon on Huntsville Avenue in Springdale Wednesday afternoon, less than an hour after he had been identified as a suspect in the murders of Clinton and Cristen Brink at Devil's Den State Park Saturday.
During a news conference Thursday afternoon, Col. Mike Hagar, director of Arkansas State Police, said there was no known association between the Brinks and McGann. He described the crime as a "random event."
Investigators declined to detail the encounter that led to the murders, but they confirmed for the first time that the Brinks died as a result of stab wounds. State Police could not say if they've recovered the murder weapon, but knives that were gathered from searches of McGann's home and car are undergoing testing.
It was the suspect's car that led to his arrest. Initial reports said the killer was seen driving away from Devil's Den State Park in a black Mazda sedan, its license plate covered by tape. But tips from the public led State Police to conclude that the car was, in fact, a Kia Stinger. That detail helped led them to McGann.
According to investigators, the suspect suffered an injury during the encounter in the woods. Col. Hagar said that injury "resulted in blood loss at the scene" of the crime. DNA from that blood, according to investigators, proved a match for McGann's DNA.
McGann recently moved from Oklahoma to Arkansas to take a teaching job in the Springdale Public School system. District officials said McGann had not come into contact with Springdale students or their families.
Below is the preliminary report from the prosecuting attorney's office:
