TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - The daughter of a man detained by ICE during an immigration raid at a Tallahassee construction site is speaking out days after her father was bussed out of the capital city.
Britney Padron said her father, Jose, was at the construction site on Gaines Street Thursday when Florida Highway Patrol troopers and Homeland Security showed up.
Homeland Security Investigations Tampa said the raid resulted in the arrest “of more than 100 illegal aliens.” HSI Tampa also noted some had been previously deported, and others had criminal backgrounds.
Padron said her father spent 24 years in the country as an undocumented immigrant, has no criminal record and is a good man. She said he raised her in Atlanta, where the family still lives. The 22-year-old has two siblings, all born in the United States.
He worked as a concrete finisher, taking jobs across the South.
More Tallahassee news:
She said her father was fearful of picking up work in Florida because of the immigration laws, but took the job in Tallahassee anyway. He was able to work in Tallahassee twice without incident. It was his third time in the capital city when FHP and ICE arrived.
She said when they did, he immediately reached out.
“Obviously a lot of emotions came out. Crying, sobbing, everything,” Padron said. “He told me just to take care of my brother. And to give him my phone number. I don’t know if he wrote it down somewhere, but I made sure he had my correct phone number wherever he went.”
Padron said her father called days later from a facility in El Paso, Texas, and asked the family to fight for his release.
“He said, ‘’I don’t care, I want to be with you guys, I want to be here with my family, I don’t want to leave you, I don’t want to leave my children,” Padron said.
She says she’s not sure what will happen next, but they are working to raise money through a recently created GoFundMe and are looking into getting legal help.
