CANYON, Texas (KVII) — A teenager is suspected of planning to kill people at the Fourth of July parade in Canyon.
According to court records, Kevin Alexander Hunt, 19, is charged with possession of components of explosives.
Hunt was booked into the Randall County Jail around 9:30 p.m. Friday and is being held on a federal detainer.
The arrest warrant on state charges was sealed Friday. No federal charges have been filed.
At this time, the Department of Public Safety would only confirm the arrest and charge.
According to a source, DPS learned about the plot and placed a GPS tracker on his SUV. They noticed Hunt was repeatedly driving the parade route.
Multiple law enforcement agencies stopped Hunt on July 2 at VFW Road and Tatum Schulte Lane, approaching his SUV with guns drawn.
The DPS Criminal Investigations Division and federal agents executed a search warrant at his home in Canyon.
They found bomb making materials.
According to a source, Hunt had gone around Amarillo and Canyon trying to buy an AR-15, but couldn't get one.
He then bought magazines for an AR-15, hoping to still get an assault rifle. Hunt also bought a bunch of ammo.
Our source also said law enforcement had tracked him for quite some time, including following him to gun shows.
The day of the parade, area police were placed on alert in case Hunt was not acting alone.
DPS is expected to release information about the case next week.
