PLAINS, Ga. (WALB) - On December 12, 1974, Jimmy Carter announced his candidacy for president.
Carter’s political career began in the 1960s when he was elected into the Georgia State Senate, representing Southwest Georgia. Then, in 1970, Carter was elected governor of Georgia.
Carter announced his candidacy for president 50 years ago. He won the Democratic nomination and was elected president of the United States in November of 1976, making him the first and so far only president from the Peach State.
Jimmy Carter was president from January of 1977 until 1981. Some of his most notable accomplishments as president have to do with foreign policy, including the Camp David Accords.
President Carter was a champion for global human rights, and his efforts did not stop after his presidency. Carter is known as the man who never retired.
President Carter was also the first former president to reach 100 years old before he passed away peacefully in his Plains, Georgia home on Dec. 29, 2024.
