Description
ATLANTA, Ga. (WALB) — On December 25, 1929, Georgia’s The Fox Theatre opened on Christmas Day in the heart of Atlanta.
The Fox has been bringing theatre, music, movies, dance and other live performances to life for nearly a hundred years. The first ever showing at the Fox was the premiere of Disney’s “Steamboat Willie.”
The theater faced difficult times in the 1930s, 1960s and 1970s, even closing in 1974. Facing demolition of the historic theater, the community launched a “Save the Fox” campaign and raised $3 million to restore the theater.
The Fox reopened in 1975 and has operated continuously since, solidifying its status as a cultural landmark in Atlanta. The theater and its ornate design hosts over 250 performances every year.
