ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — On December 28, 1952, baseball player Ray Knight was born in Albany.
Knight went to Dougherty High School and lived in Albany until 1970 when he was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 10th round of an amateur draft.
Knight went on to play for the New York Mets, where his career took off. The Mets won the 1986 World Series against the Boston Red Sox. In that series, Knight batted .391 and scored the Mets’ final run of their season. Knight was later named the World Series MVP and the National League Comeback Player of the Year.
After his playing career, Knight became an analyst for ESPN and then joined the coaching staff for the Cincinnati Reds in 1993.
