GEORGIA (WALB) - On December 4, two major Georgia historical events occurred.

The first was in 1979 when Jimmy Carter announced his reelection campaign for president.

Carter lost in a landslide in that 1980 election, winning only five states and D.C. Those states were Minnesota, West Virginia, Maryland, Rhode Island and Georgia. Ronald Reagan won the other 45 states and became the 40th president of the United States.

Just a few years later on Dec. 4, 1982, Georgia native and UGA legend Herschel Walker won the Heisman Trophy.

Walker spent three seasons as a Georgia Bulldog from 1980 to 1982. That string of three years was one of the most successful times in Bulldog history. The Dawgs won three straight SEC championships and got a national championship in 1980.

Before leaving early to play in the NFL, Walker set 11 NCAA records, 16 SEC records and 41 UGA records.

After winning his Heisman in 1982, Walker was elected to the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame in 1999.
