ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - President Donald Trump’s administration announced Tuesday a $3.89 billion public-private partnership loan to add toll lanes along a 16-mile section of Ga. 400.
According to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, the loan originates from the Build America Bureau and is for a public-private partnership between the Georgia Department of Transportation, the State Road and Tollway Authority, and SR 400 Peach Partners, LLC.
Duffy said the funding, made possible by the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act, is the largest loan approved to a single borrower to date.
Georgia will soon be home to the largest public-private partnership in @USDOT history!
The SR 400 Express Lanes will boost our competitive edge with job creators and ease the commutes of hardworking Georgians. Thank you @POTUS & @SecDuffy for supporting this vital effort. https://t.co/kTJFjcwklW
The project will add new lanes in both directions along a section from MARTA’s North Springs Station to one mile north of McFarland Parkway.
Peach Partners is also providing $75 million in future bus rapid transit-related improvements.
The transportation department said the project is expected to reduce delays by over 19,000 hours each day, or about 15 minutes per traveler, due to less idling and traffic congestion.
Duffy also said the project will enhance public safety through new bridges and other safety improvements, replacing or widening several existing bridges and reducing traffic incidents by an estimated eight percent.
The new express lanes will be tolled using congestion pricing based on demand.
