WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump has his sights set on the Windy City to be next in line for a criminal crackdown similar to the one in Washington, D.C.

During an announcement in the Oval Office on Friday, Trump criticized Chicago's Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson's leadership and said, “We'll straighten that out probably next. That'll be our next one after this. And it won't even be tough."

Trump touted his federal takeover of D.C. on Thursday night by joining National Guard troops, law enforcement and federal agents at a U.S. Park Police operations center and declaring he can keep troops in the city "as long as I want."

However, the federalization of D.C. police can only last 30 days. Any extension to Trump's federal takeover would have to be approved by Congress, which is on recess until September.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi announced that federal authorities have made 630 arrests and seized 86 illegal firearms.

The D.C. Police Union also reported that violent crime is down by 22% and property crime is down by 6%. Carjackings saw the biggest drop, down by 83%. Robberies were down by 46% and car thefts were down by 21%.

As of Friday, approximately 2,000 National Guard troops are in D.C. from multiple states, including West Virginia, South Carolina, Mississippi, Ohio, Louisiana and Tennessee.
