Description

(TNND) — A tsunami warning for Hawaii has been downgraded to an advisory, and a warning remains in effect for Northern California after a powerful, 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia early Wednesday.

Officials in Hawaii said the "worst part of it" is over and lifted evacuations across the state, according to O'ahu Emergency Management.

"Remain cautious in or near the water. Widespread flooding is NOT expected. Stay away from beaches, shorelines, and out of the ocean," the agency warned.

Maj. Gen. Stephen Logan, the Adjutant General of the State of Hawaii Department of Defense, said an advisory means there is the potential for strong currents and dangerous waves, as well as flooding on beaches or in harbors.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said waves as high as five feet struck Hawaii.

The first tsunami waves were projected to hit Hawaii at 1:17 a.m. EST Wednesday and at 2:15 a.m. EST, the O'ahu Department of Emergency Services warned residents to take cover.

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said that so far, no damage has been recorded, but it will take two to three hours of observation before authorities will be able to determine if the even has passed.

In California, waves of more than 3 1/2 feet hit Crescent City overnight, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Crescent City officials warned on social media that higher surges could arrive around high tide and could affect lower lying areas. They asked people to stay away from beaches and waterways.

The NWS in the Bay Area said there were tidal swings of 2 to 2.5 feet in as little as 15 minutes.

“This can create some seriously dangerous currents along beaches and harbors,” the weather service said. “It’s just a good idea to stay away from the water today!”

The quake struck at 8:25 a.m. Japan time with a magnitude of 8.8 magnitude and a depth of about 21 kilometers (13 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It was centered about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from the Russian city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Multiple aftershocks as strong as 6.9 magnitude followed.

The earthquake appeared to be the strongest recorded since the 9.0 magnitude earthquake off northeastern Japan in March 2011 that caused a massive tsunami that set off meltdowns at a nuclear power plant. Only a few stronger earthquakes have ever been measured around the world.

By Wednesday afternoon local time, parts of Japan were under an advisory instead of a warning.

A viral video showed the moment the 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck in Russia’s Kamchatka region, while also highlighting the resilience and strength of doctors performing surgery.

Doctors are seen holding onto the patient, surgical equipment and monitors as the room shook.

Minister of Health of the Kamchatka Krai, Oleg Melnikov, said that despite the danger, doctors remained calm and stayed with the patient.
