Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – Two people were injured in what police say were two separate shootings late Thursday night.
Albany Police say the first incident happened at around 11:43 p.m. at R&M Grocery on Martin Luther King Drive. The victim is a 25-year-old woman.
She was taken to the hospital for her injuries and is in stable condition.
The second incident happened at around 11:55 p.m. in the 500 block of Blaylock Street. The victim was identified as a 28-year-old man.
He was taken to Phoebe for his injuries and is in critical condition.
Police say he was outside of a parked vehicle when the suspect pulled up and began shooting.
The owner of R&M Grocery told WALB her surveillance video shows men with masks getting out of a car and spraying bullets. Her car took some of the hits.
She says she’s devastated because she had just spoken with White moments before the gunfire.
“I’m really upset by all these things, whatever happens, because this happened in front of me physically,” she said.
There have been five known shootings in Albany this week. Police Chief Michael Persley and City Manager Terrell Jacobs held a press conference on Thursday to address the violence.
They say store owners should keep people from loitering on their property or operating illegal gambling machines, where many problems happen.
“If illegal activity is allowed to be conducted on those premises, then violent actions can be a result of it all,” Persley said.
The 25-year-old woman is now recovering from her injuries. Her sister shared this message with WALB:
“Stay Calm. Stay Alert. Stay Aware. My sister is blessed, thank God for allowing her to stay calm during a hard time and thanks to those EMS and surgeons for moving swiftly. And thanks to my mom—you’re always there for us. If we don’t have nobody, we got our momma.”
Albany Police are currently investigating both incidents.
These two shootings bring the total to five that Albany Police are investigating just this week.
At this time, no arrests have been made.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (229) 436-TIPS or APD at (229) 431-2100.
