Description
CAIRO, Ga. (WALB) - Two South Georgia men have been sentenced to life in prison following their convictions in a July 2024 double homicide near Azalea Park in Cairo.
According to a press release, a Grady County Superior Court jury found both defendants, William Phillip Mosely II and Willie Cooper, guilty on all counts after a three-day trial. The verdict brings an end to a case that began with a deadly shooting last summer that left two people dead.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 near Azalea Park in Cairo. Cairo Police responded to reports of gunfire and discovered two victims; James Sherman Jr., 35, and Heather Haywood, 41, both of Cairo. Both were later pronounced dead. Investigators determined the killings were intentional, prompting a months-long investigation that ultimately led to the arrests.
Following the guilty verdicts, the judge sentenced both men to life in prison. Officials say the sentencing reflects the severity of the crimes and the impact on the victims’ families and the Cairo community.
Cairo Police and prosecutors credited coordinated investigative efforts for bringing the case to trial and securing convictions. Authorities emphasized their commitment to holding violent offenders accountable and ensuring justice for victims.
With sentencing complete, the case is now closed at the trial court level. Any appeals would proceed through the Georgia appellate court system.
