MOULTRIE, Ga. (WALB) — United Way of Colquitt County surpassed its largest ever fundraising goal by over $20,000, raising nearly $725,000, with totals still increasing from ongoing projects.

Executive Director Caroline Horne credits new, community-focused fundraising ideas for allowing the organization to set higher goals each year.

“So when I came on, one of the things that I changed and really wanted to do with United Way was— Let’s do things every year. How much fun would it be? I love things, right? People love Disney World. They love the excitement of it, and sometimes fundraising can be boring, but why not make it fun,” Horne said.

Some of the fundraisers this year included putting on shows, a Jail ‘n’ Bail fundraiser and more, helping the community get directly involved with giving back.

This year’s campaign chair for the United Way fundraiser, Sheriff Rod Howell, said it’s amazing to see this type of support from the people in the area.

“I love our community. I love how giving our community is, and it’s just— This organization showed me how much it does do for us. It’s been fun. I mean, you just see how great [Moultrie] is,” Howell said.

The money raised over this past year will go toward projects for the Boys and Girls Club, Parks and Recreation and several nonprofits that are designed to give back to the community. The Parks and Recreation department said it plans to add a new soccer field.

Local resident Jarrod Brogdon said these fundraisers are helping create a better environment for everyone living in Colquitt County.

“They support many other organizations, and putting money back into our own community helps everyone that lives here and helps create a better atmosphere and community for all of us,” Brogdon said.

The funds will support multiple community programs, helping give back to those in need across Colquitt County.
