EDISON, Ga. (WALB) - Multiple agencies responded to the scene of a deadly house fire in Edison early Thursday morning.

Officials say the fire occurred near Bay Road and Rainbow Avenue around 2:43 a.m. First responders reported flames reaching approximately 50 feet high, with the home fully engulfed.

“When we got here, the house was fully engulfed. We went to work to getting that fire put out,” Eula Battle, a Calhoun County Fire Chief, said. “With something like this, there was nothing that could be salvaged.”

Authorities confirmed that everything inside the residence was destroyed. Earlier, officials believed a person was still inside the home when the fire broke out.

Calhoun County Coroner Darien Brown has now confirmed that the person inside the home is deceased. Brown says the victim has not yet been identified, and the cause of death is still under investigation. He added that authorities are in the process of notifying the victim’s family, but wanted to extend his condolences.

“Just stay prayed up and hug on one another,” Brown said. “This was a tragic loss to our community.”

The grief is shared between the small-town Edison community. Residents say everyone in the town is feeling the loss.

“A lot of people knew him and his family,” Kathy Hardwick, a local resident, said. “We are all still shocked that we had this big fire here. It’s just sad to see something like this happen in our town.”

The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
