ACROSS GEORGIA (WALB) - Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler J. Harper announced Wednesday, March 19, that Vidalia onion season opens soon.

Harper said in a press release that growers will begin shipping crops to grocery stores April 13. Each year, the Vidalia Onion Committee and the Ag Commissioner’s Office choose a “pack date,” and onions cannot be harvested or sold until after that day.

The official pack date is chosen based on soil conditions and weather. This ensures the sweetest, highest quality onions make it to stores.

“Georgia’s world-famous Vidalia onions are coming to a store near you very soon, and we are thrilled that professional chefs, home cooks, and consumers across the globe will soon be enjoying the incredible, sweet flavor of our Georgia Grown Vidalia onions.”

Vidalia onions are part of Georgia’s #1 industry.

According to the Vidalia Onion Committee, Vidalia onions generate more than $120 million for the state every year. The sweet onions are grown in 20 southeastern Georgia counties with 10,000–12,000 acres planted yearly.

Vidalia onions represent roughly 40% of the total U.S. spring onion production.
