DALE COUNTY, Ala. (WSFA/WTVY) - A patrol vehicle’s dashcam was rolling Friday night when a tree fell and injured a south Alabama sheriff’s deputy at the scene of a multivehicle crash related to Hurricane Isaias.

Dale County Sheriff Mason Bynum shared the video with WSFA 12 News. It shows a tree falling across an SUV and striking a nearby deputy.

The crash scene was on U.S. Highway 231 in Newton. A car struck a tree, which fell into the roadway and was hit by multiple other vehicles, the sheriff said.

While deputies were at the scene, another tree fell onto one of the vehicles, trapping the driver. The tree also struck the deputy. Bynum said the deputy’s injuries were minor.

The deputy was taken to an area hospital. The SUV’s driver was extricated and is also said to be OK.

The incident is a reminder of how dangerous road conditions can be, especially in south Alabama. Bynum said numerous trees were down in his jurisdiction and urged residents to stay off the roads.

“It’s a very dangerous situation, very fluid situation. We just urge people to please stay off the roadways right now.”
