SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. (WALB) - U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock is traveling to Social Circle on Monday to oppose a new ICE detention center planned for the city, whose leaders say they were not consulted before the Trump administration moved to bring the facility to town.
Local officials said they lacked the resources to support the detention center and were blindsided by the decision.
The visit follows a separate $68 million deal to convert an Oakwood warehouse into a similar ICE detention facility. That project is expected to cost Hall County $800,000 in tax revenue.
Warnock is working to block both purchases. He is scheduled to meet with Social Circle’s mayor and city manager Monday morning.
