VATICAN CITY (7News) — The Vatican remains without a new pope after black smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney just before 6 a.m. Thursday EDT, signaling another inconclusive vote in the papal conclave after the death of beloved Pope Francis.
Cardinals from around the world are meeting in secret, casting ballots to elect a successor to Pope Francis. The conclave will continue until a pope is chosen -- another vote is expected at 1 p.m. EDT.

The 133 cardinals from around the world remain behind closed doors as they continue casting ballots inside the Sistine Chapel. The cardinals will continue to hold two rounds of voting Thursday afternoon until a winner is found.
The world now waits for the moment when white smoke appears, indicating a new pope has been elected. For the past century, it has taken between three and eight ballots to find a pope.

Ahead of the gathering, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, presided over the Mass at St. Peter's Basilica and called for unity in faith.
"May the Pope elected may be he whom the Church and humanity need at this difficult, complex, and troubled turning point in history," Re said during the celebration.
