Lightning hits police car in Newcastle amid severe weather; no injuries reported (Newcastle Emergency Management)
NEWCASTLE, Okla. (KOKH) — The Newcastle Police Department witnessed a shocking sight when lightning struck a patrol car during severe weather Monday evening.
According to Newcastle Emergency Management, the lightning strike did not injure anyone nearby.
The car is seen on video being struck, and smoke rises from the vehicle afterwards.
"If you hear thunder, you’re close enough to get hit. Get inside, stay away from trees and metal, and unplug electronics until the storm passes," the department wrote on Facebook. "Take lightning seriously every time."
Residents across Oklahoma experienced high winds, hail, and lightning on Monday and several counties were in a tornado watch for a majority of the afternoon.
The National Weather Service issued alerts for severe flooding and tornado warnings as the storms swept across the state.
