ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — In response to soaring fuel prices from the U.S.–Israeli war with Iran, Gov. Brian Kemp on Friday approved a 60-day suspension of Georgia’s gas tax.
On paper, the relief starts now. But how long until it hits the pump?

Not instantly. There’s no switch that flips at every station at once. Economists say drivers could start seeing it this weekend, and more clearly by next week.
The state gas tax is about 33 cents a gallon, but that doesn’t cancel what’s been happening over the last month.
AAA says the average gas price in Georgia hit $3.77 a gallon Thursday, up 39% in a month. The tax suspension only covers part of that increase, which is tied to the war in the Middle East.

This is Kemp’s fourth gas tax suspension. The last time he suspended the tax was in response to Hurricane Helene in 2024.
If prices stay high, lawmakers may face pressure to extend the suspension or find another form of relief while making up lost road funding.
Kemp also signed a separate tax rebate on Friday. The rebate is up to $250 for single filers, $375 for heads of households and $500 for couples filing jointly.
