Description
CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - The Chatham County woman accused of posing as a lawyer could soon be taking a plea deal.
Court documents filed by Sharong Smith’s attorney say Smith and Chatham County prosecutors are close to reaching a plea deal in the case, meaning Smith would not face a jury.
Last May, WTOC Investigates first told you that Sharong Smith, also known as Nicole Johnston, was accused of posing as an attorney by her former employer, Amy DeLozier. DeLozier told WTOC Investigates that Smith handled mediations, gave legal advice, and appeared in court as an attorney on behalf of the firm.
Several of Smith’s former clients testified in affidavits that Smith presented herself to them as a lawyer, took payments from them, and kept them for herself.
Shortly after WTOC Investigates brought you the story, Smith was indicted on 14 counts, including forgery, identity fraud, theft and the unauthorized practice of law.
Smith originally plead not guilty to the charges.
She’s expected to be back in court in June.
