Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) —An Albany apartment complex has left some of its residents concerned about their safety after a woman was robbed at gunpoint outside her apartment.
According to a report from the Albany Police Department (APD), the armed robbery happened near building nine at Princeton Place Apartments off N. Westover Boulevard around 10:15 p.m. on Oct. 15.
The 26-year-old victim told officers that she just arrived home in her Nissan Sentra when she briefly noticed someone walking by.
As she was about to get out of her car, a man came to her driver’s side window with a pistol and pointed it at her face, per the report.
She told the officers that when she swiped the gun away from her face, he demanded that she get out of the car.
The victim added that after noticing another man nearby, she quickly got out of the Nissan and the two men dressed in all black clothing drove off.
APD said there were no witnesses or surveillance video of the incident, but investigators were able to track the car moving through Albany using FLOCK cameras.
Around 1:00 a.m., officers found the Nissan wrecked in the parking lot of Windsor Apartments on W. Broad Avenue, with no suspects in sight.
While the case remains under investigation, some Princeton Place residents say they are concerned for their safety.
WALB received a news tip about the incident from a concerned resident on Oct. 18.
They claimed that there have been people in the neighborhood with masks on, hiding in bushes and looking through windows with flashlights.
They added that the apartment replaced the front security gate not too long ago, but it’s still not working.
In early June, residents were asked to fill out a form to access the property, as the complex prepared to hire a new gate contractor.
However, four months later, nothing has been done, and the broken gate is still up.
Princeton Place sent an email to its residents on Oct. 21 acknowledging the incident:
“Dear Residents,
We want to take a moment to address the recent incident on the property and assure you that we are aware of the situation and are actively working to get our gates repaired as soon as possible. First and foremost, we sincerely apologize for not communicating this information with you sooner. We understand how important your safety, security, and peace of mind are, and we regret that we did not send out a notice when the incident first occurred. In addition to working on the gate repairs, we are also exploring options to bring in an additional courtesy officer to conduct nighttime property checks and provide an extra level of visibility and support for our community. We truly appreciate your patience, understanding, and grace as we work through this situation. Please know that we take these concerns seriously and are committed to keeping our residents informed as we work toward a resolution. Thank you for being a valued part of our community."
WALB reporter Miles Staten went to the leasing office on Oct. 23 to speak with management about residents’ concerns, but they declined to comment.
However, they did confirm a member of their regional team will be on the property to finalize gate repairs next week.
