Description
VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - Lowndes County is in desperate need of rainfall. The county is listed as being in a D4 exceptional drought by the U.S. Drought Monitor. A D4 drought is the worst drought condition recognized by the (USDM).

A D4 exceptional drought is defined by the USDM as: “Exceptional and widespread crop/pasture losses; shortages of water in reservoirs, streams, and wells creating water emergencies.”

Lowndes County fire officials have responded to multiple grass fires and wildfires since February. The county remains under burn restrictions until further notice, according to EMA Lowndes.

EMA Lowndes asks all residents to “please hold off on any outdoor burning until the restriction is officially lifted. These conditions create a high risk of fires spreading quickly, putting our community and first responders in danger.”

EMA Lowndes Public Information Officer Megan Barwick encourages the community to follow the EMA Lowndes Facebook page and register for the Alert Lowndes updates for the latest information on burn restrictions.
