ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The Albany Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred around 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 29 in the 500 block of Odom Avenue.
Police on scene said they are investigating the incident as a homicide case, and that they have a suspect in custody.
An APD press release named Landon Carr, 30, as the suspect. They said Carr was arrested on the 300 block of South Jackson Street after a short pursuit.
Police confirmed Robert J. Spann Jr., 37, died of multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso. Spann was from Warwick, Georgia, according to the Dougherty County coroner. Spann died as a result of his injuries at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, officials said.
APD said their investigation revealed that Carr and Spann were at one time in a relationship with the same woman.
The release said that after the shooting, Carr chased the woman and rammed his vehicle into hers.
Carr was taken to the Dougherty County Jail and now faces the following charges, according to APD:
- Murder
- Possession of a firearm during the commission of certain crimes
- Aggravated assault - firearm
- Fleeing
- Attempting to elude
- Speeding
Witnesses at the scene said children were present when shots were fired.
Alfred Howard, who owns properties in the area, said he went to the scene as soon as he heard gunshots.
“When we heard the shots and stuff like that, we get out — me, my wife and the guys next door," Howard said. “We go around the corner; the other guy’s laying on the ground dead.”
