ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) issued a reminder as the summer months trudge along — you might start seeing more geese around.
The DNR said that Canadian geese often hang around in the Southwest Georgia area, but around June and July, they cannot fly because their feathers are molting. That means their old feathers are shedding to make way for new ones.
Because they can’t fly, you may see geese hanging around your property more than usual.
The DNR provided a few things you can do to encourage the geese to leave.
Try making noise. The DNR said that geese will often scurry away if frightened by loud noises. You can also spray repellents around your property, put up wire or string fences, the DNR said.
The DNR also wanted to remind people that these geese are protected under state and federal law, so you cannot kill them without a permit.
