SALEM, Ore. (KATU) — Eleven people were taken to the hospital in a mass stabbing incident at the Union Gospel Mission in Salem on Sunday night, police officials said, adding that they have a suspect in custody.
Officers were called out at about 7:15 p.m. on reports of multiple stabbing victims at the Union Gospel Mission on Commercial Street NE, which serves as a men’s shelter.
Initial reports state that 11 people were taken to Salem Health hospital with varying types of injuries. There’s no immediate word on the current status of the victims.
Officers took a suspect into custody; they have not released any information about him or what charges he could face.
"This is a very fresh incident, and detectives are gathering the facts," Angela Hedrick, a public information officer for Salem Police said in a statement.
Police closed off Commercial at D Street, saying a detour is in place that sends traffic west to Front Street.
