AMERICUS, Ga. (WALB) - Americus city leaders accepted a $1.7 million ceremonial check on Friday, Feb. 20. Officials said the federal investment could reshape the heart of their city.
The funding was secured through FY26 Community Project Funding and supported by U.S. Congressman Sanford Bishop, who spoke during the ceremony at City Hall. The funding will go toward long-planned streetscape upgrades in downtown Americus.

City officials said the improvements will focus on safety, accessibility and revitalization.
Phase one of the project is expected to target key upgraded sidewalks, better lighting, improved crosswalks and infrastructure enhancements.
Qaijuan Willis, Main Street and Downtown Development Authority Director, said residents and business owner impact would be immediate. He said the funding will provide safer pedestrian access, improved curb appeal and stronger potential for economic growth.
