ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Two people were shot and the suspected shooter was taken into custody after an off-duty officer intervened at an Atlanta recreation center that is being used as a warming center, according to the Atlanta Police Department (APD).
On Thursday morning, around 10 a.m., police started investigating a report of “multiple people shot” at Central Park Recreation Center, which is in the 400 block of Merritts Avenue in northeast Atlanta.
An off-duty APD officer was working at the center when a man inside, later identified as Antonio Wooten, 37, became irate and started threatening people inside and he and another got into an argument, according to law enforcement.
Police said Wooten pulled out a gun and started shooting, injuring two others. The off-duty officer also fired his weapon.
APD officials said the two people shot were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and are expected to survive.
Wooten was also taken to Grady with broken arm after falling in the incident, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said. The GBI also said the suspect was not shot by the off-duty officer.
Wooten has been charged with five counts of aggravated assault and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The GBI said one of the two people shot in the incident was a bystander not involved.
The Atlanta Police Department is speaking following a shooting involving an officer at a warming center Thursday morning. The GBI is investigating the off-duty officer’s involvement in the shooting incident.
A man named Ron said he was staying at the warming center and witnessed the shooting. He told Atlanta News First he wants to know how the gun got inside.
“I don’t know how that guy got in with a gun this time,” he said. “They do a good job with the warming centers.”
The warming center was open from 8 p.m. Wednesday and was set to close at 11 a.m. Thursday before reopening at 8 p.m.
