Description

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Two University of Georgia football players spent time detained after they were arrested for allegedly shoplifting from a Walmart in Athens, according to police.

Offensive lineman Dontrell Glover and running back Boden “Bo” Walker were arrested and charged with misdemeanors on Friday. Police said the incident happened at a Walmart on the east side of Athens.

Officers were called to the store after a loss prevention employee told police they stopped two men at the grocery market entrance who were trying to leave with power towels, paper plates and Febreze products without paying. After they both allegedly refused to go to loss prevention, one of them walked back inside before running out of the front entrance, but he came back in shortly after.

Police say an officer “made contact with the male subjects” when they arrived, detained them in handcuffs and brought them into the loss prevention office. The first responding officer identified both men, informing them they were UGA football players.

The players told the officer they were not trying to steal the items and that they must have lost track of what had been scanned between them. Loss prevention took inventory of the recovered merchandise and pressed charges based on the amount the player tried to walk out the store with, which was about $100 total.

A supervisor responded to the scene and contacted the university about the situation after being made aware of the incident. Another loss prevention employee told the players they were barred from the store for two years.

Both players were released on a cash bond shortly after being booked into the Athens-Clarke County Jail.

Atlanta News First has reached out to the university and its athletic department for a statement and the possible status of the two athletes.

The investigation is ongoing.
