ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Even more mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile virus in Fulton County, according to the county’s board of health.
The Fulton County Board of Health (FCBOH) said the mosquito traps that tested positive were in the northwest, northeast and southwest quadrants of Atlanta.
“The results indicate the presence of infected mosquitoes in the area and FCBOH is working with the pest control vendor to treat the nearby areas,” the board of health said in a release.
The board said it is notifying those in the areas about the positive results and how to prevent mosquito bites and breeding.
On July 18, two other mosquito traps in Atlanta tested positive for West Nile.
Initially, two mosquito traps in Hapeville and northwest Atlanta tested positive for the virus on July 13.
FCBOH is urging people to remember the 5Ds of mosquito bite prevention to fight against bites and breeding:
- Dusk/Dawn - Avoid dusk and dawn activities in the summer when mosquitoes are most active.
- Dress - Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and pants for less skin exposure.
- DEET - Cover exposed skin with insect repellent containing DEET, which is considered the most effective repellent against mosquito bites, according to FCBOH.
- Drain - Empty any containers holding standing water (buckets, barrels, flowerpots, tarps, etc.), as they are breeding grounds for virus-carrying mosquitoes.
- Doors - Keep doors and windows in good shape and tight, and fix torn or damaged screens to keep mosquitoes out of homes.
