CORDELE, Ga. (WALB) — Three years ago, Crisp County Deputy Sheriff Tyee Browne was shot and killed in the line of duty while responding to a vehicle in the middle of the roadway.

On July 5, 2023, at approximately 3:40 a.m., Deputy Browne responded to a car stopped in the middle of the roadway near the 1300 block of Highway 280 West in Cordele. The vehicle’s history returned as stolen.
While Deputy Browne checked the car, the occupant shot him. The subject then took Deputy Browne’s patrol car and fled the scene.
Crisp County EMS transported Deputy Browne to Crisp Regional Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The suspect, Croshawn Cross, pleaded guilty to the malice murder of Deputy Browne and was sentenced to life without parole, with a consecutive life sentence and a consecutive five years to serve.
