ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — A typical late summer pattern is about to shift into high gear across SGA. After a quiet Wednesday, strong to severe thunderstorms will become increasingly likely from Thursday and Friday through Saturday, bringing the potential for damaging wind gusts and frequent lightning.

What to Expect

Conditions remain relatively calm through Wednesday afternoon, with a 40% chance of scattered showers and storms between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Highs will top the low 90s, with heat indices climbing to around 101. This is a good day to run outdoor errands or yard work before conditions deteriorate.

Thursday is when things change. There’s a 70% of showers and storms becoming likely after 2 p.m. continuing into Thursday evening. Highs again reach the low 90s while feeling hotter near 100.

Friday looks even more active. Rain chances increase to 80%, with showers and thunderstorms possible throughout the day, particularly after 2 p.m. Highs low 90s.

The Main Threat: Gusty Winds

While a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather is in place, any strong to severe storms that develop could produce gusts between 40 to 60 mph. Frequent lightning and heavy downpours are also possible.

What You Should Do

• Secure loose outdoor items — Trash cans, patio furniture, and decorations should be brought inside or secured.
• Keep your phone charged — Stay alert for First Alert Weather updates and warnings.
• Have a plan for outdoor activities — If you’re planning to be outside Thursday through Saturday, keep an eye on the radar and be ready to move indoors quickly if storms approach.
• Avoid driving during heavy rain — Visibility can drop quickly during intense downpours.

Looking Ahead

Saturday brings a slight chance of showers early, then showers likely after 2 p.m. with a 60% chance of rain. Overnight lows remain warm in the low 70s throughout the week.

By early next week, rain chances decrease as high pressure builds in overhead. Expect typical summertime conditions with afternoon thunderstorms possible but less frequent.
