ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Coworkers and community members have rallied together to raise money for Santos, a 40-year-old cook at Los Vaqueros, who was hit and killed while riding his bike last week on North Westover Boulevard.

The restaurant set up a GoFundMe account to raise money to send his body back to his home country of Guatemala.

Since last week, the community has managed to raise over $10,000. The funds will help cover transporting his body, funeral costs and any other expenses the family needs.

Los Vaqueros manager Ernis Reyes described Santos as a hard worker who strived to support his family back home.

“He didn’t talk too much in the kitchen. He was always quiet, he did his job and then went home,” Reyes said.

There were times when Reyes would encourage Santos to take a vacation, but because of his dedication to his family, he oftentimes didn’t.

“‘No, I just want to continue work. I don’t want to be at home. I want to make the money to send it to my mom,’” is what Reyes said Santos used to say.

According to Reyes, Santos’ mom is older in age and faces health problems. A big part of Santos’ work was to support her and her wellbeing.

“I think his mom is almost like 90 years old. She can’t literally get out of bed,” Reyes explained.

Reyes said it’s been a difficult time for the restaurant and staff. According to him, Santos’ work ethic spoke volumes.

“This is heartbreaking for us. He was one of the best guys I had in the kitchen. We literally feel so sad for the loss,” said Reyes.
