ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The Albany Museum of Art has selected LRA Constructors as the general contractor for its relocation to the historic Belk building downtown.

The museum is moving from its current location to the downtown site as part of a $22 million project expected to break ground in April.

Museum Director Dr. Andrew Wulf said the project has gained momentum despite initial skepticism from some community members.

“A city, like most cities, needs a place where people can come together and really commune with the creative and dream and have this safe, quiet, creative space where it’s unlike any other [place] that we know,” Wulf said. “Any detractors or any ‘doubting Thomases,’ I would say that they have adjusted their point of view, but I really feel like the momentum is strong. And we’ll keep winning hearts and minds as we go.”

The relocation represents a significant investment in Albany’s downtown revitalization efforts.
