Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Albany’s Fire Station 2 is ready for a major upgrade, and city leaders will soon decide if it should be demolished and rebuilt at its current site.
For 72 years, the fire station has sat at the corner of Palmyra Road and 8th Avenue. The city is considering a significant expansion: a brand new two-story, 26,000-square-foot facility to replace the aging building.
City officials said the current station is cramped and outdated, lacking the infrastructure needed for modern firefighting. The station currently houses four firefighters, all specially trained in dive rescue and trench rescue operations. Once expanded, it can house additional firefighters and their equipment.

“This new station will allow them to be able to have the equipment they need here to be able to deploy it quickly and to be able to come to the needs of our community, I think, in a very efficient way,” said Cedric Scott, Albany Fire Department Chief.
The price tag is about $10 million, with funding coming from the Capital Improvement Fund, SPLOST 7, and SPLOST 8. The city commission will vote on the proposal next week.
