ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Greg Williams dominates the stat sheet as a senior basketball player at Westover High School, but #5 said his proudest work happens off the court in the community.
Williams participates in three service organizations: Youth United, Albany Beautillion and Jack & Jill of America. His involvement with Jack & Jill represents a full circle moment. He was a member as a child, where he honed his leadership and public speaking skills and where he gained confidence. Now, Williams serves as team president for the area, helping today’s youth develop the same skills.
Leadership role focuses on education
“I’m in charge of planning events, like bringing everyone who’s in Jack & Jill together. I set up events where we can go places and learn things,” Williams said. “Like this week, we’re going to a plantation to learn a little about Black History given it is February, so those are basically the things I do.”
Williams said his community involvement is personal. He wants his two younger siblings to grow up with pride in Albany and develop the same habit of giving back. He credited his mother for pushing him to get involved initially.
“She put me in Jack & Jill. She made me do different speech contests— I’ve spoken in front of the church. She made me do a lot of stuff I probably didn’t want to do, but her making me do that has definitely made me the man I am today,” Williams said. “I’ve learned so many things from what she’s made me do.”
Basketball and academic goals
Williams continues pursuing goals on the basketball court, with his sights set on the Patriots’ first state title since 2001. He has already created a blueprint for giving back and said he hopes the kids he mentors will continue that momentum.
“It feels very good, and it also hopefully inspires others to do the same. I feel like the community needs more people to build this place up together,” Williams said. “It’s gonna take everyone, so I feel like that’s pretty good, what I do.”
In the fall, Williams will attend Georgia Southern University, where he plans to major in mechanical engineering with a specialty in vehicle design.
